Description:

Western Europe, France/ Gaul, Merovingian Dynasty, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A cast brass bird brooch with a ribbed stomach and a dramatic hooked beak, all covered in rich age-commensurate patina. The slightly recessed circular eye was perhaps inlaid with vibrant enamel at one time, and the verso contains the pin clasp and hinge. Size: 1.25" L x 0.6" W (3.2 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
