Western Europe, Italy, England, France, and Germany, ca. 14th to early 19th century CE. A fine collection of 5 Medieval to post Medieval period brass and copper alloy cast seal matrixes of various types. The largest is a vesica shaped ecclesiastic seal cast from brass, the ovoid shape with pointed tips known as the vesica was used by church officials. The center is deeply etched with a figure receiving sacrament and legend in Lombardic script surrounding. The next is a round seal with a coat of arms that incorporates a bird, escutcheon shield, and legend surrounding. This seal, as well as the other large circular matrix, both have ring handles with an etched mark at the base to indicate which way the seal matrix should be orientated when used. These other medieval seals have protruding handles with circular seal faces incised with family crests and/or personal marks. The 18th century fob seal brass and gold washed has a red glass intaglio inset into the seal face, incised with a nude pair of classical figures. Size of vesica: 2" L x 1.25" W (5.1 cm x 3.2 cm)
