Description:

Middle East, Islamic world, Medieval period, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A splendid hand-carved stone oil lamp in the form of a bird lying straight with its wings at its sides with a clearly sculpted head, a rectangular wing area, and a pointed tail. The top of the vessel is hollowed out; this allows the top of the body to serve as a large fill hole and the tail to serve as a wick. Skillful incisions decorate the body of the vessel, creating a dotted head, target-like eyes, a thin-collared neck, many front and tail feathers, and a rectangular abstract design of swirling striations along both sides of the body. Size: 5.375" L x 2.75" W x 2.2" H (13.7 cm x 7 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
