Middle East, Islamic world, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A beautiful 20K gold ring with a thick shank, a pair of stocky shoulders, and an octagonal face set with a hand-carved glass intaglio of warm citrine hues. The surface of the glass is intricately inscribed with four lines of Kufic script surrounding a central panel of Kufic script. Kufic is the earliest form of Arabic calligraphy, used as the main script to copy the Qur'an until around the 11th century CE. Kufic script was used on coins and monuments of the storied Seljuk empire as well as decorative jewelry like this example. Size (ring): 0.75" W x 0.9" H (1.9 cm x 2.3 cm); (glass): 0.625" L x 0.6" W (1.6 cm x 1.5 cm); quality of gold: 20K; total weight: 8.3 grams; US ring size 5.5.

  • Condition: Wearable as shown. Slight deformation to overall form of shank, with minor abrasions to shank, shoulders, bezel, and glass, and very light softening to some inscribed Kufic script, otherwise intact and excellent. Great patina throughout.
