Description:

Europe, later Medieval period, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. A beautiful 96% silver ring, made of two strips of silver pressed together and held in place with two borders of silver incised to look woven. The interior strip is smooth, while the exterior strip is incised in textura script - the enduring writing style of the high and later Middle Ages - to have a Latin inscription. This is partially difficult to read, but it seems to say, "JASPER MELCHIOR BALTHAZAR" and ends with "AG", presumably referring to the silver. These are traditionally the names of the three Magi, although the names come to us from a Greek text written in ca. 500 CE (as the names of the Magi are never mentioned in the Bible). Size: 1.15" W (2.9 cm); US ring size 13.5; 10 grams
