Description:

Western Europe, England, France or Germany, Medieval period, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A riding spur forged from iron featuring a spiked rowel and the original buckle. The spiked rowel is held within a short housing and rotates on an axel pin. The slightly curved and arched heel band terminates with curled tips to form loops for suspending the buckle and two hooks that probably connected to a leather strap to adjust the fit. The spur evolved from a singular pointed "prick" to the rowel design by the 10th century and became popular in the 14th century. Spurs became symbols of chivalry and honor for European knights, and disgraced knights would have their spurs broken off by the enemy. Size: 6" L x 4" W (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
