Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Europe, possibly Hungary, ca. 1100 to 1453 CE. A cast bronze duck vessel, interestingly reminiscent of works from the early Bronze Age in Hungary that were inspired by the farming calendar and prefigured Celtic animal art, including representations of domestic animals as well as wilder creatures. In this example we see a bird with nicely delineated wings, tailfeathers, curved neck, and a head with large eyes and a curved beak. A pair of perforated attachments for suspension. Size: 9" L x 5" H (22.9 cm x 12.7 cm); opening 3.25" in diameter (8.3 cm)

In their book entitled, "Art of the Celts" (1992), Lloyd and Jennifer Laing discuss two early Bronze Age vessels found in the Carpathians, one from Csicser and one from Hungary. The piece from Hungary depicted on page 12 shows "a bird with ribbed body representing feathers, an elegant swan's neck and gently uptilted beak." (Laing, p. 12) While this example differs slightly in form, with its shorter neck and no visible legs, it does share a certain resemblance to the Hungarian find, and an observation of the underside reveals that this piece may have once stood on legs. A rare medieval bronze duck, reminiscent of the forerunners of La Tene culture (prior to the emergence of Celtic art) in Bronze Age and Hallstatt Iron Age Europe.
