Description:

Ancient Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 13th century CE. This leaded-bronze cross pendant is a remarkable relic of Byzantine artistry and devotion. Its flared arms culminate in wider termini, each adorned with incised circular motifs, including one at the center and four on the arms, symbolizing the five wounds of Christ. One arm retains the glass inlay that probably decorated each recessed circle originally. The verso and obverse surfaces are further embellished with incised dots and concentric circles. At the top, a circular hoop allows the pendant to be affixed to a chain or rope, making it a functional and iconic object of daily life during the Byzantine Empire. The circle, featured prominently in the design, carries profound symbolic meanings of unity, completeness, and infinity - concepts revered across cultures and time. Size: 3.5" L x 2.125" W (8.9 cm x 5.4 cm)
