Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A handsome bi-chrome cylinder vessel with incised diagonal ribbing down its exterior body; above that is a wide band of glyphoid symbols. The form is slightly corseted and broadens outward at the mouth. Cylinder vessels were frequently used as gifts, many were used to drink chocolate. Maya art depicts tall cylinders like this one being used for the preparation of a distinct type of cocoa drink that was extremely popular with the Maya. They were placed on the ground and the drink was poured from a smaller vessel above to create a frothy mixture. Size: 6.55" W x 10.9" H (16.6 cm x 27.7 cm)
