Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Maya, ca. 200 to 900 CE. A green-gray volcanic stone metate (metlatl) with sturdy tripod legs, flat sides, and a slightly concave top. Metate, a type of quern or grinding stone, are the Mesoamerican twist on a near-universal artifact of agricultural communities: the necessary tool for processing grain and seeds. The level of artistry required to carve this from a single piece of stone suggest that it was a valued object whose worth went beyond the utilitarian. Size: 9.375" L x 7" W x 3.375" H (23.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 8.6 cm).
