Description:

Pre-Columbian, Honduras, ca. 550-900 CE, Late Classic. This precious bowl is adorned with flowers following the Mayan Nik logograph. Not only did Mayan artists appreciate the intricate compositions of petals and stamen, but they also referenced the invisible characteristics of flora such and nectar and aroma. Every component of these abstract depictions - dots, balls, curlicues and squiggles- was not intended to designate a specific botanical feature but rather conjure a relatively conceptual vision. Consequently, Mayan floral imagery was quite imaginative. 5"D x 2.5"H. Provenance: Ex-private Los Angeles, CA Collection.
