Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 500 to 800CE. This ancient handbuilt ceramic figurine represents a frog or rana in Spanish. Both frogs and toads were associated with rain and all the sustenance that it brings in the Pre-Columbian world. To the Maya, frogs were believed to be the rain god Chac's musicians, known for their choral croaking songs. In addition, frogs are endowed with fertility powers as they typically lay thousands of eggs at a time. This Mayan frog sits in characteristic squatting position and opens its mouth as if singing its songs on behalf of the raingod Chac calling for raindrops to fall. 4-1/'4"T x 2-5/8"W x 3-3/4"D
