Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A mold-formed pottery whistle depicting a male dwarf. The figure sits upon a large posterior with attenuated legs flanking a rectangular loin cloth panel, and his bent arms are held to his sides. His expressive visage is composed of a jutting chin, wide nose, almond-shaped eyes with pointed corners, and a heavy brow, all beneath a roundel-encircles headdress with three pluming central crests. Traces of pale orange and red-orange pigment are visible across most surfaces, and a mouthpiece on the verso produces a nice sound when used. Size: 1.7" W x 4.9" H (4.3 cm x 12.4 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
