Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Guatemala, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built terracotta incensario vessel featuring the head of a deity or lord emerging from one end in high relief with an opening under the chin and continuing behind the headdress. The figure dons large earspools and the remains of an elaborate headdress. His face presents an expressive visage with almond-shaped eyes, a long protruding nose, emphasized cheekbones, a rounded chin, and a prominent closed-mouth smile. The vessel behind this entity is comprised of a deep bowl form attached to a high concave base that is perforated at the center, presumably so that heat could warm the fragrant contents placed within. In addition perforations were made behind each ear for suspension. Size: 6.5" W at widest point x 8.375" H (16.5 cm x 21.3 cm)
