Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A handsome terracotta vessel with globular, round-bottomed form, two attached handles at the shoulders, a short neck with a wide rim, painted with red and black slip decoration on cream ground. The iconography is special as a scribe is depicted on a central panel of each side of the vessel. Scribes were highly revered by the Mayans and usually held a prominent position in Mayan courts. Most came from aristocratic lines and some were associated with the royal house. Scribes are featured on Mayan art oftentimes with pen bundles in their headdresses. A wonderful form with aesthetic appeal and rich iconography. Size: 7-1/2"H x 8-1/2" at widest point. Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
