Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan, ca. 600 CE to 900 CE. A Mayan polychrome vase features a fine rendering of a Mayan deity (likely Chaak based on the axe and crossed bands motif in the headdress, otherwise possibly Kawil). The scene is set in the Mayan Underworld of Xibalba, based on the black background which is indicative of this in Maya iconography. Each main panel scene is separated by a smaller scene depicting complex Maya symbols of undetermined meaning. Size: 5"H Provenance: Ex-A. Kalminson, New Mexico, USA collection.
