Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, ca. 400 to 900 cue. This charming bowl features a trio of monkeys making exaggerated pantomime-like gestures in the lower register surmounted by a trio of wind god glyphs in the upper register. As the wind aspect of Quetzalcoatl, the monkey was worshipped throughout the Pre-Columbian world. This adoration for monkeys would persist in to the modern era, appealing especially to early 20th century artists such as Frida Kahlo. 6-1/4"D x 4"T Provenance: ex-Hollywood producer collection All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
