Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten region, Ca 550 to 850 CE. Tall, thin polychrome pottery cylinder decorated with rare underworld and above-world foliage scenes. Scenes with the black background are indicative of the Maya underworld, where in this case strange plants grow and spread. Separating the underworld scene is a scene of vines growing with long sharp needles. Band of true glyphs circle the top of the vessel. Cup measures 8-7/8" H by 4-1/8" d.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of a Hollywood director who acquired it in the 1990s from NYC Auction House
