Description:

Mayan Territories, Classic Maya, Ca 500 to 850 CE. This impressive jade carved pendant seduces us with its pure, apple green color, the signature hue of Mayan jade. Look closely and you will see a depiction of a Mayan ruler with his carefully carved facial features and a headdress that wraps around his entire head. Characteristic of Mayan jade work, the artist who created this piece designed the image using the natural features of the stone instead of losing any of the precious surface area. Jade, after all, was precious to the ancients of Mesoamerica and as such was reserved for the elite and highly symbolic. Archaeologists have documented two jade workshop areas in Classic Maya sites in Guatemala, Cancun and Guaytan. The studies and investigations of these workshops have revealed much about the techniques of Pre-Columbian jade work. This stone was drilled for suspension horizontally. 2-9/16"W x 1-3/4"H, intact and excellent. Custom stand. Provenance: Ex Santa Monica, CA collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
