Pre-Columbian, Mexico and Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beige-hued terracotta bowl with iconography in low relief around the exterior. Two long-beaked herons are impressed on top of diagonally-checkered patterns. A slightly concave circular base and two non-detailed panels lie in-between each avian figure, with a rounded lip and shallow bowl cavity. In Mayan mythology, Tlaloc, the revered deity of rains and by extension water and fertility, oftentimes took on the animal form of a heron as it is a seabird. Shaman and rulers impersonating Tlaloc oftentimes wore a heron-feather headdress to symbolize this association. Traces of original pigment visible on heron motifs. Size: 4.875" W x 1.75" H (12.4 cm x 4.4 cm).
