Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina, Campeche, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. An intriguing hand built terracotta flute adorned with a warrior figure donning a simian helmet mask and holding a very large spherical object. The piece shows ample remains of sky blue pigment as well as white pigment or mineral deposits. The instrument still produces a sound. The figure seems to be a shaman or warrior presenting a monkey visaged mask. Monkeys have always been fascinating for their human-like behaviors and antics which seem to parody us. For this reason, in the Pre-Columbian world, monkeys were believed to serve as mediators between humankind and the supernatural realm. Custom stand. Size: 5.375" L (13.7 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on stand
