Description:

Pre-Columbian, Copán/Western Honduras, Late Classic Period, ca. 750 to 950 CE. This is a large, deep circular pottery platter on four raised legs and with twin loop handles on the sides. Its surface is well decorated, with elaborate stylized glyphs around a central ornate figure dancing, wearing ceremonial garb. This probably related to a Maize God Ceremony, a relatively rare subject matter for one of these plates. Excavations at Ceren, a Maya city in El Salvador that was buried by volcanic ash in the 7th century CE, have revealed an almost identical tetrapod vessel that was used for serving tamales. Tamales were an incredibly popular meal at this time, served both in normal situations and at large feasts. Vessels like these were produced in the city of Copan and traded throughout Maya territory. Size: 11.6" W x 4.6" H (29.5 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Poway California Coll.
