Pre-Columbian, Guatemala and southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 900 CE. A Mayan Copador polychrome bowl with a classic deep red painted band around the rim and the exterior decorated with a series of glyph-like motifs above a depiction of the Hero Twins swimming through the underworld to retrieve the head of their father, a classic story from Mayan cosmology, all in red, orange, and black against a creamy beige ground. On the interior walls are concentric red and black bands along with a wide register of glyphoids. Copador pottery was manufactured at Copan and traded widely throughout the southern Maya region. Size: 7.75" in diameter x 2.625" H (19.7 cm x 6.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from about a 4 to 6 pieces. Normal surface wear with areas of pigment loss commensurate with age. Still a very good piece with wonderful iconography.
