Description:

Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Maya, Ulua Valley, late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 850 CE. A hand-built pottery stamp depicting an elderly figure in a crouching pose while holding a cane, perhaps goddess of midwives and medicine Ixchel. The figure wears an elaborate headdress, perhaps serpentine in form, and grasps a staff with both hands for balance and support. A conical handle on the verso enabled its use. Size: 1.875" W x 3.6" H (4.8 cm x 9.1 cm)
