Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, ca. 550 to 850 CE. A well-preserved shallow ceramic bowl decorated in the distinctive style of the Ulua Valley, an interesting satellite of the Classical Maya world. The bowl has a solid red stripe along the interior rim above the wavy orange basin, with the central kick bearing a pale-citrine hue. The exterior boasts several registers of painted motifs atop a pale-orange ground with (from top to bottom) red pyramids, thin concentric black striations, mirrored red-and-black spirals and stepped columns, additional black striations, a series of abstract mythological creatures, and a solid red spot in the concave base. Size: 7.7" W x 3.1" H (19.6 cm x 7.9 cm)
