Pre-Columbian, Maya Heartland, Ca. 300 - 900 CE. Composite flute with three chambers and 5-holes, monkey seated on top, having strong remains of original white pigment. An unusual and charming instrument with a very fine sound. The monkey is the Maya equivalent of Ozomatli, the Aztec monkey who was considered the companion spirit ('nahual') and servant of the god Xochipilli (god of music and dance). The monkey was a creature associated with the arts, games and fun. 4-3/4" H. Provenance: Ex-L. Kalina Collection, ex- Stein Collection, NY. The starting price is the lowest price at which the piece can sell.
