Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya/Toltec, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A fabulous pottery jar in the form of a deity - likely the Maya old god of fire or Huehueteotl-Xiuhtecuhtli - posed expressively with hands on knees and head projecting forward to boast an aged visage and prominent beard. His head is crowned by a flared headdress bearing a design, perhaps a glyph, at the top, while banners or sashes adorn his chest. A convex lid surmounts the cylindrical vessel. Note the liberal remains of black, blue, and white pigments that embellish the surface. Size: 6" Diameter x 8.5" H (15.2 cm x 21.6 cm)
