Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine molded pottery whistle in the form of a bird head with three feathered comb and curved beak. A slender mouthpiece extends from behind the bird's crest, and finger holes are cut into the side of the head and lower chamber to change the pitch. Size: 5" L x 1.75" W (12.7 cm x 4.4 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-S. and V. Friedman collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s
