Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A mold-made terracotta seated female whistle figure. Clearly a lady of importance, she is highly decorated - wearing a grand headdress, large earspools, a beaded pectoral, and a voluminous robe. Her visage is steadfast, as if engaged in a ritualistic ceremony. On the verso are a blow hole and sound hole for the whistle. Size: 2.625" L x 2.25" W x 3.875" H (6.7 cm x 5.7 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Small loss to whistle end. Stable cracks and chips to back/top of headdress. Repair to her left ear. Nicks to front of headdress and one earspool. Expected surface wear with pigment loss, but form is still strong.
