Description:

For every order (single or multiple lots) in this auction, Artemis Gallery will donate 25 meals to Community Food Share, a Feeding America Food Bank.

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fabulous necklace comprised of 52 greenstone beads and a magnificently carved greenstone owl pendant. The beads are strung in an attractive symmetrical arrangement - placed in accordance with size and shape - including round, cylindrical, and even two earspool beads! What's more, the greenstones themselves are inherently beautiful, presenting hues of sage with cream and russet inclusions. Size: strand is 26" L (66 cm) + pendant measuring 2.125" W x 2.25" H (5.4 cm x 5.7 cm)

The owl was widely symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world. Considered Shamanic, owls were believed to guide humans on their journeys to other worlds, the divine, and death. They were described by the Maya in the Popol Vuh as messengers of Xibalba, the sinister underworld. In some cultures an anthropomorphic owl represented a warrior or war god. Also common were naturalistic depictions of barn owls.

  • Condition: A few old nicks/chips to beads, but generally very well preserved. The pendant has deposits in recesses (one on forehead is perhaps an old nick but may be inherent to the stone), but is generally excellent. All beads and pendant are ancient. Strung on modern wiring.
