Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Guatemala, Maya, Post-Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A group of 3 brownware pots with incised glyphs or pseudo-glyphs across the surfaces. Note that 2 are the same motif which resembles entertaining vines or serpent tails with crosshatched tips, like rattlesnakes. These ancient glyphs may convey an important date, a secret message, or simply be part of the vessel's aesthetic program. It is not clear if glyphs are both pictographic and ideographic, or what role phonograms might have played, and this remains a hotly studied component of Mesoamerican archaeology. Size: 4" Diameter x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
