Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful cylindrical vessel that is hand-built from orange-brown pottery with highly burnished surfaces that create a smooth texture. The broad vessel has a squat rim on the bottom just above a trio of tab-shaped feet with excised geometric motifs, a gently flared rim on top that surrounds the deep basin, and two registers of intricately incised curvilinear motifs across the exterior. The form of the vessel and legs strongly alludes to the ceramic stylings of earlier Teotihuacan artistry that so heavily influenced later Maya artisans. Size: 5.1" W x 5.1" H (13 cm x 13 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970 to 2008
