Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Classic to Post Classic, c. 500 to 1100 CE. A ghoulish buff terracotta skull relief presenting an expressive visage comprised of bulging eyes framed by bony surrounds, an open nasal cavity, and a wide toothy grin. The surface is graced with nice traces of white pigment as well as scattered mineral deposits and areas of encrustation. A spectacular macabre artifact from the Maya! Size: 5.125" W x 6.375" H (13 cm x 16.2 cm); 9.375" H (23.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Losses to peripheries of the skull that are most visible from the verso. Nicks/chips to peripheries of nasal cavity, cheekbones, chin, and other high pointed areas. Traces of white pigment, scattered mineral deposits, and areas of encrustation grace the surface. Area of stabilization visible on interior of proper lower left corner with stable fissure visible on verso.
