Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. What an intriguing figure! This is a ceramic figure in the form of a standing man with a third leg extending from his back to create a stable base. His body is both a rattle and a whistle, both playable today! He holds a disc in one raised hand, with a bird underneath his arm, its head visible just above his waist. He wears a loincloth and a large pectoral along with a headdress and bracelets. His face wears what looks like half of a mask with a pockmarked surface. Who could this represent? Perhaps it is a shaman dressed to perform a ritual. Size: 4.25" W x 5.85" H (10.8 cm x 14.9 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
