Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Classic Period, ca. 550 to 750 CE. A mold-formed pottery cache vessel used to store cacao beans or the cacao drink. The vessel rests upon a quartet of protruding nubbin feet, has a rounded shoulder displaying a register of impressed glyphs, a squat rim, and a bell-shaped lid with a small loop handle on top. The flared walls of the lid display four separated panels of impressed pseudo-glyphs, and the glyphs on the body display symbols in abstract anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. The vessel is covered in a pale-orange slip with traces of original white pigmentation within some glyphs. Size (w/ lid): 6.25" W x 6.25" H (15.9 cm x 15.9 cm).

  • Condition: Lid repaired from multiple large pieces with small chips, light resurfacing, and adhesive residue along break lines; body is intact. Minor nicks to rims, feet, and exterior surfaces, with fading to original pigmentation, and light softening to some glyphs. Nice earthen deposits and great manganese blooms throughout. Old inventory label underneath lid.
