Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hollow-made incensario lid in the form of the Sun God named Kinich Ahau. This example of Kinich Ahau - also known as god G when referring to codices - displays the deity seated with crossed legs and bent arms held with hands atop his knees. He dons a minimal loincloth beneath a large, beaded necklace and wears an incised bangle on each wrist. His expressive countenance bears enormous, bullseye-form eyes within recessed orbitals, sunken cheeks, parted lips revealing two petite teeth, and an aggressively furrowed brow, all beneath a tall, W-shaped headdress with one large lappet draped off the left side. The hollow cavity within the body enabled smoke from burning incense to escape through his mouth as well as the top of his head. Size: 5.5" W x 6.1" H (14 cm x 15.5 cm)
