Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A stunning cylindrical vessel with a flat base, fluted walls, and a deep interior. The surface is a burnished black and beige, and the two registers framing the fluted midsection feature incised glyphs highlighted with red cinnabar. The glyph motifs, a form of Maya script, are comprised of symbols that represent sounds and/or concepts. A lovely piece of Maya pottery that may have been gifted to an elite member of society!
