Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, probably Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A charming, mold-formed pottery whistle depicting a standing shaman. He stands naturalistically, with his hands on his hips, wearing a loincloth, a long phallic pectoral, two horn-like earrings that point down to his shoulders, and two short horns atop his head. Two openings on the back allow the piece to serve as a whistle. Size: 3.35" W x 7.7" H (8.5 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection; ex-private Quinn collection
