Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, probably Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A charming, mold-formed pottery whistle depicting a resting elderly woman seated upon a tripod base. The woman has closed eyes and supports her leaning head with her left arm while her right is draped gently across her lap. Large ear spools and a tall coiffure decorate the head while recessed eyes, thin lips, and curving wrinkles denote her advanced age. A small mouthpiece doubles as the whistle's third leg and produced a nice, low-tone sound when played. Size: 2.25" W x 5.25" H (5.7 cm x 13.3 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
