Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A mold-formed pottery whistle figure standing on stocky legs. The figure has an avian-style head with features including high-arching brows, beady eyes, a prominent aquiline beak, and feathered wings on either side of the wide body. The left hand hangs gently at the figure's sides, and the right is holding a ceremonial celt. A small mouthpiece on the bottom of the verso does not produce a musical note when played. Size: 3.875" W x 4.8" H (9.8 cm x 12.2 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces with resurfacing and small chips almond break lines. Small nicks to base, body, wings, and head, with softening to some finer details, light encrustations, and light abrasions. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Whistle does not produce sound when played.
