Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery cylinder vessel with a planar base, tall walls, and a thick rim. Incised across the highly burnished, tan-hued exterior is a large band of elongated, tightly spaced ovoid rings, and above is a band of repeating pseudo-glyphs decorated with red-orange pigment. The form is slightly corseted and broadens outward at the mouth. Cylinder vessels were frequently used as gifts, many were used to drink chocolate. Maya art depicts tall cylinders like this one being used for the preparation of a distinct type of cocoa drink that was extremely popular with the Maya. They were placed on the ground and the drink was poured from a smaller vessel above to create a frothy mixture. Size: 5.3" W x 8.4" H (13.5 cm x 21.3 cm)
