Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Late Classic period, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A mold-formed pottery lid meant to top a cinerarium. The lid presents in the form of a jaguar laying prone with legs splayed out to the sides of its semicircular body, a sinuous tail draped off the hind legs, and layers of orange-red pigment across the surfaces. The feline countenance presents with bulging eyes, a narrow nose with a shallow crest on the bridge, perky ears, and raised jowls that reveal a broad tongue and sharp teeth. The hollow lid base would allow smoke into the lid and out of the jaguar's hollow maw. Size: 9.875" L x 6.875" W x 4.625" H (25.1 cm x 17.5 cm x 11.7 cm)

  • Condition: Losses to areas of face and base periphery as shown. Chips to legs, base, and head, with several stable hairline fissures, light char marks to rim of base opening, fading to original pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigment throughout.
