Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful pottery bowl with a round base, tall walls with a flared rim, and a deep basin. The vessel sits atop a notched, round foot, with incised lines on it resembling mountains. The interior of the vessel is smooth and burnished brown. The exterior is decorated with carved glyphoid forms and highly abstract jaguar heads. We know that Classic Maya rulers often took jaguar names, like Shield-Jaguar and Bird-Jaguar at Yaxchilan, and that Maya gods and kings wore jaguar skin clothing; for example, Spanish colonialists reported that there was a "Spokesman of the Jaguar" who wore a jaguar skin. The iconography on this vessel would have reminded the Maya seeing it of the power of the ruling elites. Size: 7.9" W x 4.45" H (20.1 cm x 11.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA, 2008
