Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. With dense, ornate motifs around its body, this is a ceramic cylinder vessel with rich iconography. It was probably given as a gift during a feast and used for drinking cocoa. It is tall, with a narrow mouth with a slightly flared rim, and stands atop three low, nub-like feet. Dramatic mythological creatures, their bodies adorned in flame-like feathers and elaborate headdresses with skull-like heads beneath - a row of teeth and a bulging eye socket are clearly visible. These are separated from each other by rare diagonal decorative elements that may reference the waves of the Maya underworld. Size: 4.4" W x 5.9" H (11.2 cm x 15 cm)
