Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya/Toltec, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A handsome "plumbate" pottery jar, a distinctive style of pottery from late Classic and early Postclassic Mesoamerica, probably made by a very small number of artisans around the Mexico/Guatemala border who then exported it throughout wider Mesoamerica. It is distinguishable by its uniquely shiny glaze that has been fired at very high temperatures. This example is in the form of an armadillo, charmingly lifelike, standing with its segmented tail raised and its head and ears equally perky. Armadillos are fascinating animals, often thought of in New World mythology as an "anomalous animal", because of its shell. Its prodigious digging abilities led to it being associated with agriculture and the subterranean world, linked with the dead. Size: 9.1" W x 5.4" H (23.1 cm x 13.7 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
