Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten Basin, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery cylinder vessel with a round but stable base, tall walls, and deep interior cavity, and a thick rim. Coursing across the exterior are a pair of highly-abstract zoomorphic creatures with enormous heads in profile, perhaps squids with spiky beaks, with their tentacle-laden lower bodies displayed in-between. The intricate curvilinear details are further outlined in black pigment as is the solid red bands which encircle the area above the base as well as below the rim. Size: 5.875" W x 5" H (14.9 cm x 12.7 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with three small areas of restoration and overpainting, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to rim, body, and base, and light fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory labels beneath base.
