Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten Basin, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a flat base, squat walls, a thick rim, and a shallow basin. The interior of the bowl is decorated in pale-orange slip with a ring of red pigment around the rim. The orange-slipped exterior is adorned with multiple panels depicting mythological scenes, the artwork painted in glyph-like blocks. These fascinating, abstract depictions would have had deep meaning to the artist who painted the bowl and its original owner; today they provide an enigmatic mystery for modern eyes. Size: 8.8" W x 3.2" H (22.4 cm x 8.1 cm)
