Description:

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful hand-carved and polished stone celt or axe head. The narrow handle has a rounded tip, and the body widens with convex sides to a curved cutting edge. The stone is a lovely mottled coloration with black, green, and pink-beige hues. This celt was made by pecking and polishing the stone to a pleasantly smooth surface. This blade may have been hafted onto a wooden handle of a ceremonial hatchet. Designed for a votive function, celts like these are fabulous examples of fine artistry! Size: 7.6" L x 2.81" W (19.3 cm x 7.1 cm)
