Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala and southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A magnificent bas relief carving of a Maya lord with a glyph inscription, made from the leg bone of a human or deer. The man stands in profile, lavishly adorned in jewelry: ear flares, headdress, pectoral with a humanoid face pendant, and a vertical column of glyphs is carved before his front leg. The carvings may have once been highlighted by red pigments such as cinnabar and such an implement likely had a ritualistic or ceremonial function. Bone, including human bone, was a popular material for tools and adornments such as awls, and perforators, blood letters, and even smoking pipes. Size: 7" L x 1.25" W (17.8 cm x 3.2 cm)
