Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fabulous pottery tripod rattle vessel comprised of a slightly rounded bottom and thick walls that spread out to a wide, flared rim, all upon 3 tubular, rattle legs. A creamy beige slip envelops the entirety of the dish, while the interior features orange-painted abstract designs with a central floral motif surrounded by parallel and undulating striations. Liberal remains of black-painted details further embellish the interior and exterior. Each leg displays a pair of rectangular perforations, while 1 leg contains a petite, pottery ball serving as a clapper and allowing the vessel to produce a lovely rattling sound when shaken! Size: 13.8" Diameter x 4.8" H (35.1 cm x 12.2 cm)

- Condition: One leg still rattles. Loss of clappers in 2 other legs. Repaired with restoration over break lines. Some stable hairline fissures. Expected nicks and pitting. Otherwise, very nice with liberal remains of pigments.
